Forest Quest

CLIENT: PROJECT LEARNING TREE CANADA (PLT CANADA)

As you camp in a beautiful forest, you suddenly hear a voice on your shortwave radio inviting you on an adventure through the secrets of the forest... will you join? Project Learning Tree Canada (PLT Canada), an initiative of Sustainable Forestry Initiative, aims to advance environmental literacy. To educate young adults about sustainable forest management, PLT Canada partnered with FableVision for Forest Quest, an online learning experience.

Steering away from a traditional course, Forest Quest takes 18-25-year-olds on a unique, mysterious journey to learn about forest fundamentals, wildlife biology, the impact of forests on people’s lives, biodiversity, and the needs and rights of Indigenous peoples. By following the radio voice and interacting with characters along the way, users pass through four forest areas – Lightning Peak, Wildlife Valley, Canoe Creek, and Seven Generations Path. In each section, users click on items to learn more about a forest topic and complete an activity. Interviewing different characters provides professional development to young adults as they learn about green careers.

Inspired by American and Canadian national parks posters, FableVision used bright and colorful visuals and animation to bring the forest to life and excitement to the interactive, without skewing too young. The web-based app also integrates with PLT Canada’s learning management software, so the site can save a user’s progress.

Forest Quest is available for free on PLT Canada’s website.
